Ask a Study Skills Question
I never realized how stressful school could
be. Any tips?
Hmm, yes, I have some tips, though I also would like to take
this time to put in a good word for the Wellness Center and/or
the Counseling Center. Both resources provide support for
students in ways to manage stress. http://www.counseling.appstate.edu/ Check it out! It's free, and these people are good at what
they do.
- Improve your time management skills. If you are putting
off work until the last minute, you probably are stressed!
- Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat right, and
exercise at least 3 times a week. I think exercise is one
of the best ways to fight stress (though you don't want to
do overkill either-I've met some students who spend 2-3 hours
a day, every day, exercising, which seems to me a good way
to wear yourself out AND to find that you don't have time
to do other things.
- Find something that you like to do (have fun!). Join a
club, meet with friends, etc. You may not have time to do
this every day, but you are allowed to be happy some of the
time-in fact, you need it! (Word of caution: some students
believe that drug and alcohol use is a good way to have fun
and relax. Even if we were to ignore the fact that such activity
is illegal for most college-age students, studies show that
such substances have a detrimental effect on people physically,
emotionally, and financially, particularly when consumed in
excess. It just seems logical to look for a less costly and
more effective way to have fun).
- Find spiritual outlets. If you are religious, attend a
local church. If you are not, you can nurture your spirit
in other ways-walks in nature, reading uplifting works, creative
work, volunteer work, etc.
- Practice taking deep breaths when you start to feel stressed.
This method seems to be very effective in reducing stress.
- Talk to someone, a friend, family, counselor, or other
resource. Just talking it out can be a big help.
This list could go on and on-everyone has a different way
to fight stress. You may ask your friends (the ones who don't
look stressed out!) and see what works for them.
