Taking the Praxis I is a source of stress for many students. It is a standardized test, which is for some students already an unpleasant task, and this test is often what stands between you and finishing your degree. In order to succeed with the mental task, you need to build your ability to manage stress both as you prepare for the test and as you take the test.
Make stress management a priority for you. Your first step should be to take advantage of the free services on campus designed to help students with stress.
The Wellness Center offers support in stress management and strategies to control test anxiety, including biofeedback. Call 262-3148 to schedule an appointment. You can also attend the Biofeedback Information Session held every Wednesday at 4 pm to find out more about ways to handle stress and to consider if you want to try biofeedback. Some students who use this service to prepare for the Praxis have been able to work on practice tests as they were connected to biofeedback--a great way to practice managing anxiety as you recreate the testing circumstances.
One tip from Coordinator Kit Olson--"Eat a good breakfast before you take the test!"
The Wellness Center is located on the second floor of Miles Annas Student Services Building (where the post office is located). For more information, check out this website: www.wellness.appstate.edu
*take care of yourself--eat right, sleep right, etc.
*practice taking deep breaths, especially when you feel yourself getting stressed
*exercise (even a 20 minute walk each day could help. But...your usual amount of walking between classes or to your car doesn't seem to work as a stress reliever, even if it should count)
*improve your time management skills
