Ideas for Review for Praxis I Writing
Visit The Writing Center: Call to schedule an appointment 262-3144 or see if they have a drop in appointment available. The Writing Center is located on the bottom floor of the new library. Bring sample writing prompts and your answers with you, and get help from a writing tutor on ways to improve your answers. The writing center is the best resource for preparing for the Writing Praxis.
A free website that seems very helpful with grammar review is http://www.grammarbook.com/interactive_quizzes_exercises.asp.
You can also improve your grammar skills and writing skills at www.comfit.com – for a small monthly fee (a free trial is available).
Here are more ideas for self study:
- Write at least one sample paper per week-type on a computer if you will be taking the test on the computer or hand write it if you will be taking it on pencil and paper.
(If you are taking the test soon, write one sample paper per day!!! But I recommend devoting at least a month of reviewing to prepare, and one very focused final week of review right before the test)
*If you type it on the computer, turn off the automatic correction for grammar and spelling (In Word: click on Tools- Options then unclick the 'check grammar as you type''check spelling as you type''always suggest corrections' and 'check spelling with grammar')
The first papers you write, you probably should not try to time yourself. Later on, though, you should use a timer and write the paper in 30 minutes or less.
- Bring your sample paper to the Writing Center in the basement of the library to get feedback from a writing consultant. When you work on the paper, you should look at both writing tips AND correcting grammar errors.
This link should give you a long list of writing prompts.
- I also recommend students go through the long list of sample writing prompts, and just write a short outline for each one, listing the three reasons you could give in a paper. This is good practice in planning the paper and thinking about the questions, so you might be able to do it more quickly when test time comes.
- Some students also find it helpful to practice with a sample test booklet. You can do so by emailing Cama Duke at dukecj@appstate.edu for an appointment or by coming to a drop-in session during the hours posted at www.lss.appstate.edu/praxis.html
Here is our latest handout of tips on ways to review for the Praxis Writing test, created by Anna Keber, Praxis Support Coordinator, and Cama Duke. It is in PDF format, which means it can be read on the free Acrobat Reader software installed on all campus computers or available for free download onto your own computer.
